Research engineer, CNRS
Archaeometrist specialising in the characterisation of ceramic archaeomaterials and clay resources

Nadia Cantin has served as an archaeometry engineer with the CNRS for 18 years; she joined the CEAlex on 1 July 2022 as head of the characterisation laboratory. She establishes and leads archaeomaterial analysis strategies. Her previous work, in Lyon and then Bordeaux, focused mainly on the study of ceramics and geomaterials used in ceramic production, with the aim of examining the exploitation of natural resources, the transformation of raw materials, production chains, the emergence of technical innovations and the circulation of ceramics in their socio-economic contexts.
She is involved in a number of research programmes looking at the circulation of amphorae, medieval ceramics and terracotta objects. This long-term approach has led her to work with ethnoarchaeologists and to reflect on the qualities of modern ceramics, through the analysis of the manufacturing process, from the collection of raw materials to finished products.
