CartAlex is online!

The Centre d'Études Alexandrines (CEAlex) is pleased to announce the launch of CartAlex, a new online cartographic platform dedicated to the archaeological and historical heritage of Alexandria and its region.

Designed as a central portal for cartographic resources, CartAlex will progressively bring together the catalogue of the CEAlex Map Collection alongside the full range of research projects based on spatial representation and modelling carried out by the Centre.

To mark its launch, the platform presents the Archaeological Map of Alexandria, which assembles a substantial body of archaeological discoveries made within the city.

At the heart of the project is a Geographic Information System (GIS) that brings together several georeferenced historical map layers, including the reconstruction of ancient Alexandria by Mahmud Bey el-Falaki (1866), the plan published by Barbara Tkaczow (1993), and the Alexandrian cadastre compiled by the Survey of Egypt (1933–1948).

By overlaying these historical sources within a single georeferenced framework, the Archaeological Map offers researchers and the public a new way to explore the archaeological history of Alexandria.

Project Team

CartAlex is the result of a collaborative effort bringing together scientific, technical and web development expertise:

Scientific Direction: Thomas Faucher, Cécile Shaalan

Technical Coordination: Vincent Razanajao, Kamal Mohsen

Web Development: Ezz Eldin Ahmed, Mustafa Morsi

Processing of Archaeological and Geomatic Data: Filippo Mi (CEAlex, 2025–2026), Aubin Bettiol (ENSG, 2023), Mathias Cunault (University François Rabelais, Tours, 2011)
