The Mareotid is the countryside close to Alexandria which played a direct role in supplying Alexandria via Lake Mariout, formerly known as Mareotis. This region is complex from a geological and hydrological point of view as well as historically, and has always been a frontier zone in the history of Egypt, the limits of which are sometimes difficult to define. It is currently undergoing a phase of rampant urbanisation and industrialisation that is threatening archaeological sites.

The aim of the archaeological mapping project led by the CEAlex is to gather all possible information on ancient Mareotid and make it available to the scientific community in the form of a Geographic Information System (GIS). In addition to cartographic and geomorphological studies, bibliographic and archival research, the results of fieldwalking surveys and archaeological digs will be included in order to gather the most comprehensive documentation possible.

The CEAlex surveys are focused on the part of the Mareotid located to the west of the main lake basin and south of the western arm. As part of the ANR Géomar prgramme (2013-2016), an initial area on the south shore of Lake Mariout was surveyed in autumn 2016, along with the islands. The programme continues today, with the survey area officially extended in 2017 to the railway line south of Bahig and Borg el-Arab.

 

The pooling of data from the bibliography, from cartographic work and from field research has made it possible to outline the evolution of the region’s occupation over the long term, from the Pharaonic era to the 11th century AD, when it became semi-desert, up until the end of the 1970s. Other aspects of this research are being developed, such as the evolution of Lake Mariout and the relationship between man and the environment, ancient land parcelling and its evolution, and the region’s amphora production workshops (archaeological, ceramic and archaeometry studies).
